What does a single to three phase upgrade actually involve?
Standard residential properties in Sydney are connected on a single-phase supply - one active conductor at 230V. Three-phase supply adds two more active conductors at 230V each, separated by 120 degrees. The result is roughly three times the power capacity and far better load balance across multiple large appliances running simultaneously.
The upgrade happens in two stages. The network-side stage involves Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy providing a three-phase supply to your property - often by adding conductors to the existing overhead or underground service. This must be carried out by a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP). The consumer-side stage involves replacing your single-phase switchboard with a three-phase board and balancing your circuits across the three phases. This is general electrical work but is typically coordinated by the same contractor.

A three-phase upgrade is two jobs. The network-side component - adding a three-phase service line, a three-phase meter, and updated fuses at the street-to-property connection - must be done by a Level 2 ASP. The consumer-side component - a new three-phase switchboard and circuit rebalancing inside your property - can be done by any licensed electrician. We handle both so you have one fixed quote and one point of contact.
Is three-phase available at your street?
Before applying for a three-phase upgrade, we confirm whether three-phase infrastructure is already available at your street boundary. Most established Sydney suburbs have three-phase overhead or underground network cabling nearby. If three-phase supply requires a transformer upgrade or a cable extension from a more distant network point, the cost and timeline increase significantly. We check this as part of the initial assessment.
Network application timeline
Upgrading from single to three-phase requires a formal application to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. This includes a technical assessment of your proposed load and the network's capacity to supply it. Approval typically takes three to eight weeks from lodgement. We lodge the application, respond to any technical queries from the distributor, and advise you of the confirmed installation date.
Switchboard and load balancing
A three-phase supply is only as effective as the switchboard and circuits behind it. After the network-side upgrade, your existing circuits need to be distributed across the three phases to avoid overloading any one phase. We replace your single-phase board with a three-phase board, assign circuits to phases based on their typical load, and install compliant RCD protection. A poorly balanced three-phase board can still cause problems - we do this properly.

02Who handles the Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy application for a three-phase upgrade?+
We do. As your Level 2 ASP, we prepare and lodge the connection application with your distributor, respond to any technical queries, and coordinate the installation date. You do not need to contact Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy directly. We also install the three-phase meter as part of the job and submit the CCEW and NOSW documentation on completion.
03How long does a single to three-phase upgrade take in Sydney?+
The physical installation - the service line upgrade and the switchboard replacement - is typically completed in one to two days. The longest part is waiting for network approval from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, which normally takes three to eight weeks from lodgement. 04Does three-phase power cost more per unit in NSW?+
Three-phase supply uses the same network tariffs as single-phase. Your retailer bills you for the electricity you use across all three phases. Running more total load does mean a higher electricity bill, but the per-unit rate is not higher because you have three-phase supply. Some EV chargers and industrial equipment run more efficiently on three-phase, which can lower the energy cost per task compared to running the same load on single phase with an inverter.

Yes, that is one of the most common reasons Sydney homeowners enquire about three-phase upgrades. A 22 kW Type 2 AC EV charger requires a three-phase supply. On a single-phase supply the maximum AC charging speed is 7.4 kW. If you are installing a 22 kW charger at home, the supply upgrade, the switchboard work, and the charger installation can all be quoted together. 06What is the difference between Level 2 and general electrical work in this context?+
The Level 2 component is the network side: installing or upgrading the service line, the three-phase meter, and the service fuses at the connection between the street network and your property.
