Three-phase supply adds two more active conductors at 230V each, separated by 120 degrees. The result is roughly three times the power capacity and far better load balance across multiple large appliances running simultaneously.
The upgrade happens in two stages. The network-side stage involves Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy providing a three-phase supply to your property - often by adding conductors to the existing overhead or underground service. Upgrading from single to three-phase requires a formal application to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. This includes a technical assessment of your proposed load and the network's capacity to supply it. Approval typically takes three to eight weeks from lodgement. We lodge the application, respond to any technical queries from the distributor, and advise you of the confirmed installation date.
A three-phase supply is only as effective as the switchboard and circuits behind it. After the network-side upgrade, your existing circuits need to be distributed across the three phases to avoid overloading any one phase. We replace your single-phase board with a three-phase board, assign circuits to phases based on their typical load, and install compliant RCD protection. A poorly balanced three-phase board can still cause problems - we do this properly.
