Test and tag is the process of inspecting and electrically testing portable electrical appliances to confirm they are safe for use in the workplace. The process is governed by AS/NZS 3760 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
Under the NSW Work Health and Safety Act 2011, employers have a duty to ensure that electrical equipment used in the workplace is safe and without risk to health. For most workplaces, this means having portable appliances tested at intervals set out in AS/NZS 3760 and attaching a tag recording the test date, test result, and next test date.
Construction sites have the most frequent requirements. Under AS/NZS 3760, portable electrical equipment used on construction sites must be tested every three months. Other workplace environments have longer intervals, typically six months to two years depending on the equipment category and environment.

AS/NZS 3760 applies to portable electrical equipment with a flexible cord and plug that is used in a workplace. Extension leads, power boards, hand tools, kettles, computers, and portable appliances of all kinds are included. Fixed wiring is not covered by AS/NZS 3760 and is instead addressed by AS/NZS 3017 and periodic wiring inspection.
Every test starts with a visual inspection of the plug, lead, cable, and appliance body. Damaged insulation, cracked plugs, exposed conductors, or signs of overheating are grounds for immediate fail. Visual inspection catches many unsafe items before the electrical tests even begin.
The two core electrical tests are earth continuity (confirming the earth conductor provides a low-resistance path to safely carry fault current) and insulation resistance (confirming the insulation between live conductors and the appliance body is intact and not leaking current). Both are measured with a PAT tester against AS/NZS 3760 pass criteria.
A passed item receives a durable tag recording the test date, next test date, and tester ID. A failed item receives a different colour tag indicating it must not be used. We provide a complete test register for your records, which is your evidence of compliance for WHS inspections and insurance purposes.

The NSW Work Health and Safety Act 2011 requires employers to ensure electrical equipment is safe. AS/NZS 3760 provides the practical framework for meeting that obligation. While the standard itself is not mandated by name in the WHS Act, following it is the accepted way to demonstrate compliance. SafeWork NSW and WorkCover NSW use it as the benchmark during inspections and incident investigations.
AS/NZS 3760 sets different intervals by environment. Construction sites require testing every three months. Hostile environments such as workshops and outdoor commercial use require testing every six months. Normal office environments typically require testing every 12 to 24 months depending on equipment type. We review your site and advise on the correct intervals.
Yes. Computers, monitors, printers, phone chargers, desk lamps, and other portable office equipment are included under AS/NZS 3760 for workplace electrical safety. The testing interval for office environments is typically 24 months for low-risk equipment. We can test an entire office in a single visit with minimal disruption to staff.
In most cases yes. We work systematically through the site and can test equipment in sections as it becomes available. For items that need to be unplugged and tested while staff are present, we minimise disruption by planning the sequence with your office or site manager.
Failed items receive a fail tag and must be taken out of service immediately. We note the failure reason in the register. You can arrange for the item to be repaired and retested, or disposed of. We can carry out electrical repairs to cords and plugs on site for straightforward failures if the item is worth repairing.
Yes. We provide a full written test register after every job. It includes item description, serial number where applicable, test date, result, and next due date. This is your documentation for WHS audits, insurance claims, and SafeWork NSW inspections. We retain records and can reissue documentation if needed.
