A changeover switch (also called a transfer switch) is the device that safely connects your generator to your building's wiring while isolating it from the electricity grid. This isolation is legally required in NSW. Connecting a generator directly to building circuits without a proper changeover creates a serious electrocution risk for grid workers and your neighbours.

ATS systems are standard for commercial, medical, and data centre applications.
A whole-property changeover transfers all circuits to the generator. This requires a generator sized to your total property load, which can be expensive. A partial load changeover supplies only a critical circuits sub-panel, allowing a smaller generator to cover essential loads. We design the system around your generator's rated output and the specific circuits that matter most.
Standby rated generators are designed for occasional use during outages. They carry a higher peak rating but are not designed for continuous long-term operation. Prime rated generators are designed for continuous use as a primary power source and are used on off-grid properties, construction sites, and remote facilities. Most Sydney residential and commercial backup applications use standby-rated units.
Generator installations require careful earthing design to ensure fault protection is maintained when operating in island mode. Portable generators have separate earthing requirements to permanently installed standby units. Some ATS configurations require the neutral to be switched as well as the phase conductors. No. Connecting any generator to building wiring without an approved changeover switch that isolates the building from the grid is illegal in NSW and extremely dangerous. Backfeed through a generator into the grid network can kill electricity workers. NSW electrical safety regulations require an approved transfer switching arrangement for any generator connected to building wiring.
