Outdoor and security lighting covers any permanent light fitting installed outside a building: security floodlights, sensor lights, driveway and path lighting, garden feature lighting, carport lights, and perimeter lighting for commercial properties.
In NSW, connecting any light fitting to your home's or business's fixed wiring is licensed electrical work. DIY connection of outdoor lights is illegal regardless of how simple the job looks. It can void your home insurance and creates a genuine shock and fire risk, particularly in outdoor environments where fittings are exposed to moisture.
We install new outdoor circuits where needed, connect fittings to existing circuits where capacity allows, specify IP-rated fittings appropriate for the location, and set up sensor and timer controls. All work complies with AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and outdoor-specific requirements for circuit protection in areas exposed to moisture.

IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. It is the minimum suitable for most outdoor-covered locations such as under eaves, verandas, and carports. Fully exposed fittings in gardens or on poles may need IP66 or higher. Swimming pool surrounds have specific requirements. We specify the correct IP rating for your location.
PIR (passive infrared) motion sensors detect the heat signature of moving bodies within their field of view and trigger the light. Sensitivity, range, and hold time can usually be adjusted. Modern LED sensor lights use negligible standby power and provide bright, instant light when triggered. We set the sensor angle to minimise false activations from animals or passing traffic.
Halogen floodlights produce good light output but run hot and use significant electricity. A 500W halogen floodlight can typically be replaced by a 50W LED equivalent with the same or better light output. LED floodlights also last significantly longer, reducing the frequency of lamp replacement. We recommend LED for all new outdoor installations.
Outdoor circuits must be protected by an RCD (safety switch) under AS/NZS 3000. In wet or exposed areas, weatherproof power points with spring-loaded flap covers are required. Garden circuits sometimes use armoured cable buried at a depth that meets AS/NZS 3000 requirements for mechanical protection. We design and install outdoor circuits to comply with these requirements.

No. Connecting any light fitting to fixed wiring is licensed electrical work in NSW, whether the fitting is indoors or outdoors. DIY installation is illegal, voids home insurance, and creates a shock risk particularly outdoors where moisture is present. We are licensed under Contractors Lic 493243C and issue a CCEW for notifiable work.
Covered outdoor locations such as under eaves, verandahs, and carports typically require a minimum IP44 rating, though IP65 is more commonly specified and provides better long-term protection. Fully exposed locations require IP65 or above. We recommend and supply appropriate fittings based on the specific location.
After installing the fitting, we adjust the PIR sensor angle, sensitivity, and hold time to suit the location. For a front driveway or entry, the goal is to detect a person approaching from the street while minimising false activations from passing cars or animals. We do a walk-test at the end of the installation to confirm the setting works correctly.
Yes. Underground cable runs for garden and path lighting must use appropriate cable type (typically armoured or conduit-protected) and be buried at a depth complying with AS/NZS 3000. We install underground circuits to the correct standard so you have a safe, permanent installation rather than a run of surface extension lead.
We install the power supply circuit for security cameras and can assist with mounting points. We do not supply or configure the camera systems themselves, but we can coordinate with your security system installer to ensure power is available at the right locations.
For commercial perimeters, LED floodlights with PIR sensors on motion-sensitive zones combined with continuously on LED fitting around entry points is a common setup. We can design a perimeter lighting plan based on your site layout, coverage requirements, and energy budget. For larger commercial sites we provide a lighting plan before quoting.
