[ OVERVIEW ]
Who is responsible for a private power pole?
A private power pole is a pole on your property that carries the overhead service line from the electricity network to your building. If a network pole at the street cannot reach your building directly, a private pole on your land bridges that gap. It looks like a street pole, but it is your asset - which means inspection, maintenance, and replacement are your responsibility as the property owner.
Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy periodically inspect service infrastructure in the Sydney area. When a pole on private land is found to be decayed, leaning, or structurally compromised, the distributor issues an electrical defect notice. In NSW, that notice gives you 21 days to arrange rectification before your supply can be disconnected.
Replacing a private power pole is Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) work. It involves disconnecting and reconnecting the overhead service line, which crosses into network-connected infrastructure. We hold Level 2 ASP Licence 6855 and Contractors Licence 493243C and carry out private pole replacements on both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy networks across Greater Sydney.
[ SYMPTOM CHECKLIST ]
Signs your private power pole needs attention
Defect notice from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy citing decay, lean, or structural failure
Visible rot at the base of a timber pole - the most common failure point
Pole leaning noticeably or pulling the service line out of alignment
Termite damage or fungal decay visible in the lower section
Pole was installed more than 25 to 30 years ago and has never been replaced
Rusting or structural failure of a steel pole
Upgrading from a timber pole to a longer-lasting galvanised steel option
If you have received a defect notice, do not wait. The 21-day clock starts from the date on the notice. We can usually provide a fixed quote within 48 hours of a site assessment and work to your deadline. See also our page on electrical defect notice rectification for the full defect clearance process.

Private pole replacement: what to expect
Timber vs galvanised steel poles
Timber poles are traditional and lower cost to install. They are susceptible to decay and termite attack over time, particularly at the ground line where moisture is highest. Galvanised steel poles cost more upfront but typically last 50 or more years with minimal maintenance. We assess your site and load requirements and recommend the best pole type. Both options are available to AS/NZS standards and meet Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy technical requirements.
Who owns the pole and who pays
If the pole is on your land, it is your asset and your responsibility. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy own the poles in the public network on streets and council land. Private poles on residential or commercial property belong to the property owner, even if the electricity network uses them to extend the supply to your building. The distributor can issue a defect notice, but the cost of replacement falls to you.
Service disconnection and reconnection
Replacing a power pole requires a planned temporary disconnection of your overhead service line. Your Level 2 ASP coordinates this outage window with your distributor. The disconnection is scheduled in advance and the supply is restored once the new pole is set, inspected, and the service line is re-terminated. We aim to minimise your outage window to a single day or part-day for most residential jobs.
Converting from pole to underground supply
If your private pole is due for replacement and you want to eliminate aerial cabling entirely, we can quote underground supply as an alternative. Converting from overhead to underground removes future pole maintenance and storm-damage risk but costs more upfront. See our overhead and underground mains page for typical pricing. We can scope both options in a single site assessment so you can compare them.

Frequently asked questions
01Who is responsible for replacing a private power pole in NSW?+
The property owner. If a power pole is on private land, it is your asset and your legal responsibility under NSW law. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy own the poles in the public street network, but private poles on residential or commercial property belong to the owner. When your distributor issues a defect notice for a failing private pole, the rectification cost falls to you.
02Do I need a Level 2 electrician to replace a private pole?+
Yes. Private power pole replacement is classified as Level 2 ASP work in NSW because it involves the service line connecting your property to the electricity network. The job requires a planned disconnection, structural work on the pole, re-termination of the overhead service cable, and submission of a CCEW to your distributor. A standard licensed electrician is not accredited for this work. We hold Level 2 ASP Licence 6855 and Contractors Licence 493243C.
03How long does a private power pole replacement take?+
Most residential private pole replacements are completed in one day from disconnection to reconnection. This includes removing the old pole, setting the new one in concrete, re-terminating the service line, and restoring power. The concrete typically needs 24 to 48 hours to cure before the pole bears full load, so some jobs are staged across two visits. We include the full schedule in the written quote.
04Should I replace my timber pole with a steel pole in Sydney?+
Steel poles last significantly longer than timber - typically 50 or more years versus 25 to 35 years for treated hardwood in Sydney soil conditions. Steel does not decay, resist termites without ongoing treatment, and requires less long-term maintenance. The upfront cost is higher, but if you are replacing a failing timber pole, steel is worth considering as the longer-term option. We can quote both in a single site visit.
05Can I convert from a private power pole to underground supply instead of replacing it?+
Yes. If your pole is due for replacement, converting to underground supply is a practical alternative. Underground mains remove the ongoing maintenance cost of a pole and reduce storm and tree-damage risk. The conversion costs more upfront - typically from $4,500 depending on cable run length - but removes future pole replacement costs. See our overhead and underground mains page for more detail. We can quote both options in a single assessment.
06How do I know if my defect notice is about the pole or something else?+
Your defect notice lists the specific item of concern. Common descriptions for private pole defects include rot at the base, excessive lean, structural degradation, or non-compliant fittings. If the notice mentions the service line, point of attachment, or consumer mains rather than the pole structure, a different scope of work may apply. Send us the notice and we will confirm exactly what is required before you commit to anything.
07Will I be without power while the pole is being replaced?+
Yes, for part of the day. Replacing the pole requires a planned temporary disconnection of the overhead service line. We coordinate the outage window with your distributor and schedule it to minimise disruption - typically a few hours in the morning with power restored by early afternoon on most residential jobs. We confirm the outage duration in the written quote.
