Essential circuits backup panel installation in Sydney home providing power during grid outages
[ OVERVIEW ]

What are essential circuits and backup power systems?

An essential circuits panel is a sub-board that groups your most important loads, such as refrigeration, lighting, medical equipment, communications, and internet, onto dedicated circuits that can be supplied from a backup power source when the main grid is unavailable.

Backup power comes from a battery storage system with islanding capability, a generator connected through a changeover switch, or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for short-duration coverage. The critical difference between a basic solar and battery system and a true backup system is the islanding hardware and the critical load panel that separates your essential circuits from the rest of your property.

In NSW, all backup power electrical work is licensed electrical work. Connecting any generator or battery to building wiring requires a licensed electrician and appropriate changeover switching to prevent backfeed to the grid. We hold Contractors Licence 493243C and design essential circuit systems to AS/NZS 3000 and AS 4086 standards.

Common reasons homeowners and businesses install backup power

  • Household member with medical equipment requiring continuous power supply
  • Home-based business that loses revenue and data during an unplanned outage
  • Area with a history of prolonged grid outages or storm-related disruptions
  • Solar and battery system that currently goes offline during a grid failure
  • Adding backup capability to an existing battery storage installation
  • NSW bushfire or flood zone property requiring self-sufficiency during emergency
  • Server room, communications equipment, or NAS storage needing UPS protection
  • New home build or renovation wanting resilience built in from the start

If you have relied on the grid without interruption, an unexpected multi-day outage can be genuinely dangerous for some households. We assess your essential loads and design a backup solution that matches both your risk profile and your budget.

Backup power concepts explained

Critical load panel and circuit selection

A critical load panel (also called an essential services panel or backup sub-board) isolates your most important circuits from the general installation. The backup power source supplies this panel only during an outage, which keeps the backup duration practical. Selecting the right circuits is a key design step. Lights, fridge, internet, medical equipment, and phone charging typically make the cut. Ovens, hot water systems, and air conditioning typically do not.

Battery backup vs generator backup

Battery backup is silent, requires no fuel, switches automatically, and supplies clean power. It is limited in duration by battery capacity. Generator backup can run indefinitely while fuel is available and can supply larger loads, but requires manual starting in some configurations, ongoing fuel supply, and periodic maintenance. Many Sydney homes with high resilience requirements use both, with the battery for automatic short-term coverage and the generator for extended outages.

Automatic vs manual changeover

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) detects a grid failure and switches your backup source on without you doing anything. A manual changeover switch requires you to physically switch over, which is fine for planned outages but risky if you are away when an unplanned outage occurs. Battery systems with islanding capability typically provide automatic changeover. Generator systems can be fitted with either option.

NSW life support registration

If anyone in your property relies on life support equipment that requires continuous electricity, you can register with your electricity distributor (Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy in Sydney). Registration means the distributor is required to give advance notice of planned outages and to prioritise your restoration in an unplanned outage. Registration is free and can be arranged directly through your distributor's website or phone line.

Couldn’t be happier with Electrosurge Solutions. I had a full house rewire done and a bunch of upgrades like downlights, pendant lighting, new powerpoints, ethernet/data cabling, and exterior sensor lights. Sam is very tidy and everything looks and works perfectly. Really easy to deal with and you can tell they take pride in doing things properly. Definitely recommend if you want a quality electrician.

Frequently asked questions

01What is a critical load panel and do I need one?

A critical load panel separates your most important circuits onto a dedicated sub-board that your backup power source supplies during an outage. Without one, a battery or generator would need to power your entire house, which limits backup duration and requires a larger system. If you have a medical device, home office, or essential refrigeration that must stay on, a critical load panel makes your backup system significantly more effective.

02Can I connect a portable generator to my house wiring in NSW?

Yes, but it must be done through a properly installed changeover switch. Connecting a generator directly to your power points (backfeed) is illegal in NSW and creates a serious electrocution risk for your neighbours, emergency services, and yourself. A licensed electrician installs an approved changeover switch or inlet point that safely isolates your property from the grid when the generator is running.

03Will my solar and battery system work during a blackout?

Only if it is specifically configured for backup operation. Standard grid-connect solar and battery systems shut down when the grid fails for safety reasons. Systems with islanding capability (such as Tesla Powerwall 3 with backup enabled, Sonnen, or certain Sungrow hybrid configurations) can continue to supply selected circuits. We install the required hardware and configure your system for backup if your battery supports it.

04How long will a battery backup last during an outage?

Duration depends on battery capacity and the loads on your critical circuits. A 10kWh usable battery supplying lights, fridge, internet, and phone charging (typically 500W to 1kW total) will last 10 to 20 hours. A fridge alone draws around 100 to 150W average but cycles on and off. We calculate expected backup duration from your actual load measurements before recommending a battery size.

05What should I include on my essential circuits list?

Common choices include: main lighting circuits (not all), refrigerator, medical equipment, internet router and NBN equipment, one or two power points for phone charging and laptops, and security system. Common exclusions: electric hot water, dishwasher, washing machine, oven, and air conditioning (unless the system is large enough to support them). We help you select circuits based on your specific household needs.

06How do I register for NSW life support priority with my electricity distributor?

Contact your electricity distributor directly. Ausgrid customers can register through ausgrid.com.au under 'Life Support.' Endeavour Energy customers can register via endeavourenergy.com.au. Your doctor or specialist may need to complete a form confirming the medical requirement. Registration requires renewal every 12 months in most cases. We can advise on the process but cannot register on your behalf.
