Home rewiring means replacing the electrical cables that run through your walls, ceilings, and floor cavities. In Sydney homes built before the 1980s, wiring is often rubber-sheathed or cloth-covered. Both deteriorate over time. The insulation cracks, hardens, or falls away, leaving live conductors exposed inside your walls.
A full rewire replaces all wiring back to the switchboard and upgrades the board itself. A partial rewire targets specific circuits or areas, such as a kitchen renovation or a room where faults keep recurring. After the job, we issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) and lodge notifiable work with NSW Fair Trading.
Rewiring work requires the walls to be accessed. On a standard timber-frame home this is done through the ceiling cavity and wall plates, minimising the need for wall cutting. Brick veneer and full brick homes may require more invasive access depending on wall construction. We assess access requirements before quoting and explain the process clearly.
If your home is more than 30 years old and has never been rewired, the wiring may be approaching the end of its safe service life. We carry out rewiring inspections and assessments across Sydney.
Rubber-sheathed cables from the 1950s to 1970s use natural rubber insulation that degrades and cracks with age and heat cycling. Cloth-covered wiring from even earlier periods offers minimal insulation. Both create fire and shock risks as insulation fails inside wall cavities where faults are not visible. A licensed inspection can determine whether your existing wiring is still serviceable.
A full rewire replaces every circuit from the switchboard out. It is the most thorough solution and is often recommended when a large proportion of the wiring is aged or when a whole-home renovation is underway. A partial rewire replaces specific circuits or zones only. We recommend the appropriate scope after inspecting your existing installation.
Modern rewiring techniques minimise wall cutting. On timber-frame homes with accessible ceiling cavities, most new cable runs can be fished through without opening walls. Brick and concrete construction requires more planning. We advise on access before quoting so you understand what the job involves before agreeing to the work.
A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is issued for notifiable electrical work including rewiring. It confirms the work was completed by a licensed contractor to the relevant standards. You should receive a copy for your records. Insurers and property buyers may ask for this document, so keep it with your property papers.

Warning signs include rubber or cloth-covered cables visible at the switchboard, repeated circuit breaker trips or blown fuses, discolouration around power outlets, a burning smell with no obvious source, and a pre-purchase inspection report that flagged wiring condition. If your home was built before 1980 and has never had the wiring replaced, we recommend a licensed inspection.
A full rewire on a standard Sydney home typically takes three to five days. Larger homes or properties with limited access may take longer. Partial rewires targeting one room or zone can often be completed in one day. We give you a realistic timeline when we quote so you can plan around the work.
Circuits being worked on will be de-energised. On a full rewire we coordinate staged outages where possible so you retain power to some areas of the house each day. A complete interruption is sometimes necessary for part of the job. We plan the outage schedule with you before work starts.
For a full rewire, many homeowners find it easier to stay elsewhere for the main working days due to dust, noise, and limited power access. For smaller partial rewires it is usually not necessary. We advise on disruption levels when we quote, based on the scope of work and your specific property.
Home insurance policies generally do not cover proactive rewiring as a maintenance item. If rewiring follows an insured event such as fire or storm damage, your insurer may cover part of the cost. NSW does not currently offer a direct rebate for residential rewiring, but upgrading wiring alongside a solar installation may qualify for Clean Energy Council or government solar rebate conditions. We can advise on your specific situation.
Standard residential rewiring does not require a Development Application in NSW. It does require notifiable work to be reported to NSW Fair Trading and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) to be issued. If you are rewiring as part of a renovation that involves structural changes, the renovation itself may require council approval separately.
