[ OVERVIEW ]
What is three phase power and when do you need it?
Most homes and small businesses run on single phase power, which uses one live conductor to deliver electricity at 230 volts. Three phase power uses three live conductors, delivering power at 400 volts between phases. The result is a more balanced, consistent supply with significantly higher capacity.
You need three phase power when your equipment requires it. Large air conditioning systems, industrial motors, commercial kitchen equipment, lifts, large compressors, welding equipment, and EV chargers with high output ratings all commonly require three phase supply.
In NSW, connecting three phase power to a premises involves your licensed electrician coordinating with your electricity distributor (Ausgrid or Essential Energy) to upgrade or confirm the supply at the street level. This coordination work falls under Level 2 Accredited Service Provider requirements. We hold Level 2 ASP Lic 6855 to handle that process.
All internal wiring to distribute three phase power within your premises is general electrical work under AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules. We carry out both the distributor coordination and the internal installation. Notifiable work is certified with a CCEW lodged with NSW Fair Trading.
[ SYMPTOM CHECKLIST ]
Common reasons businesses upgrade to three phase power
Installing commercial air conditioning or a large chiller that requires three phase supply
Setting up industrial machinery, CNC equipment, or large compressors
Adding a high-output EV charger (22kW or above) to a commercial premises
Expanding a workshop or manufacturing facility where single phase capacity is maxed out
Opening a commercial kitchen with multiple large appliances drawing significant load
Upgrading an existing single phase three phase switchboard to increase capacity
If your equipment specifications call for three phase power, or your single phase supply cannot handle your load, we can assess your site and provide a detailed quote.
[ EDUCATION ]
Understanding your power supply
Single phase vs three phase
Single phase uses one live conductor (230V to neutral). Three phase uses three live conductors with 230V from each phase to neutral and 400V between any two phases. Three phase delivers higher capacity and smoother power delivery for motors and heavy equipment.
Phase imbalance
When the load across three phases is not roughly equal, you get a phase imbalance. This stresses motors, can cause overheating, and reduces efficiency. We balance loads across phases when designing your distribution board.
Level 2 ASP work
Connecting to or upgrading the service mains that run from the street to your switchboard is Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) work. We hold Level 2 ASP Lic 6855, allowing us to coordinate with Ausgrid and Essential Energy directly rather than requiring you to manage a separate contractor.
Three phase switchboard
A three phase switchboard distributes power from the supply across multiple circuits in your premises. It includes the main isolation switch, RCDs, and circuit breakers rated for three phase operation. We size the switchboard to your current load and future expansion plans.
“Sam is an absolute legend. He fixed my hot water system this afternoon. He didn’t charge me a lot and he done a great job”
“Couldn’t be happier with Electrosurge Solutions. I had a full house rewire done and a bunch of upgrades like downlights, pendant lighting, new powerpoints, ethernet/data cabling, and exterior sensor lights. Sam is very tidy and everything looks and works perfectly. Really easy to deal with and you can tell they take pride in doing things properly. Definitely recommend if you want a quality electrician.”
“Sam is professional, courteous and honest. He is upfront with the costs and does everything per the book. He was a pleasure to work with and gave us exactly what we wanted. Highly recommended. Wish every tradie was like Sam”

Frequently asked questions
01Do I already have three phase power available at my property?+
In most commercial and industrial areas of Sydney, three phase power is available at the street. Whether it is connected to your premises depends on what was installed when the building was built. We check your meter box and confirm with the distributor during our site assessment. If you need a supply upgrade, we manage the application to Ausgrid or Essential Energy.
02How long does it take to get three phase power connected?+
Internal work is typically completed in one to three days. If a supply upgrade from your electricity distributor is required, timeframes depend on Ausgrid or Essential Energy's current workload, which can range from two to eight weeks. We advise on expected timeframes when we quote.
03Do I need three phase power for a large solar system or battery storage?+
Many larger solar systems and batteries work with single phase supply. However, some high-capacity inverters and batteries are three phase units. If you are planning a large solar installation, we will confirm the supply requirements during the design stage and arrange any necessary upgrades.
04Can I convert back to single phase if I sell the property?+
Three phase is generally an asset when selling commercial property. If you needed to downgrade, it is possible but would require a supply change application to the distributor and switchboard modification. Most properties that upgrade to three phase retain it.
05Is three phase power more expensive to run than single phase?+
The supply tariff structure for three phase is set by your energy retailer, not by the supply itself. Running the same equipment more efficiently on three phase (through better motor performance, for example) can reduce energy costs. Your energy retailer can advise on applicable tariffs.
06Do I need a Level 2 electrician for three phase work?+
Not always. If three phase supply already exists at your premises and you only need internal distribution work, a licensed general electrician handles that. If you need the supply itself upgraded at the street, a Level 2 ASP is required. We hold both Contractors Lic 493243C and Level 2 ASP Lic 6855 so we can handle the complete scope.
