What does a switchboard upgrade involve?

Your switchboard is the distribution point for every circuit in your home or business. It contains the circuit breakers, safety switches (RCDs), and main switch that control and protect your wiring.

Many Sydney homes still have switchboards built in the 1970s and 1980s. These often contain ceramic rewirable fuses or older circuit breakers that offer no protection against electric shock. They also lack the circuit capacity for modern loads like air conditioning, EV chargers, and solar inverters.

An upgrade means replacing the old enclosure, rewiring the incoming supply connections, installing compliant circuit breakers and RCDs, and labelling every circuit clearly. In NSW, switchboard work is licensed electrical work. We issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) and lodge notifiable work with NSW Fair Trading. What you need to know before booking

RCBOs (safety switches) explained

An RCBO is a safety device that protects electrical circuits from three major hazards. Earth Fault Currents: Detects current leaking to earth and disconnects power within milliseconds. This prevents electric shocks. Overload Protection: Monitors circuit load. If demand exceeds cable capacity, the RCBO trips to prevent overheating. Short Circuit Protection: Responds to sudden current surges caused by faults. Stops dangerous wire melting and fire risks. RCBOs are the preferred protective device in many Australian installations under AS/NZS 3000:2018. They replace the old setup of separate RCDs and MCBs, saving switchboard space.

Circuit breakers vs ceramic fuses

Ceramic rewirable fuses must be manually rewired after a fault. They offer no shock protection and can be over-fused by incorrect wire gauge. Modern circuit breakers trip automatically and reset with a switch. They are rated to a specific current, cannot be over-fused accidentally, and are required in all compliant installations today.

Single-phase vs three-phase boards

Most Sydney homes run on single-phase 230V supply. Three-phase supply provides three times the current capacity and is common in larger homes, workshops, and commercial premises. If you are adding heavy loads such as multiple EV chargers or a large workshop, we can assess whether a three-phase upgrade or a single-phase switchboard upgrade is the right solution.

How much capacity do you actually need?

A switchboard upgrade is the right time to plan circuit capacity for the next 10 to 15 years. Air conditioning, EV charging, solar inverters, and hot water systems each need dedicated circuits. We assess your current and planned loads and size the new board accordingly, so you are not calling us again in two years for another upgrade.

01Do I need a licensed electrician to upgrade my switchboard in NSW?

Yes. Switchboard work is licensed electrical work in NSW and must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. DIY switchboard work is illegal and will void your home insurance. We hold Contractors Licence 493243C, carry out all switchboard upgrades to AS/NZS 3000 standards, and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) for the completed job.

02How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Sydney?

A standard single-phase residential switchboard upgrade in Sydney typically costs $1,200 to $2,200 for boards up to 12 circuits. Larger boards, three-phase upgrades, or work that involves meter box reconfiguration or sub-mains upgrades generally run $2,000 to $6,000. We give you a fixed written quote before starting.

03How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential single-phase switchboard upgrades take four to six hours from start to sign-off. Three-phase upgrades or more complex jobs with meter box work may take a full day. We schedule a specific time block so you know when power will be off and when it will be restored.

04What are safety switches and do I need them?

Safety switches (RCDs) cut power within milliseconds when current leaks to earth, including through a person. They are the primary protection against fatal electric shock. NSW regulations require RCDs on all final subcircuits in new and significantly altered switchboards. If your switchboard has no safety switches at all, you are not protected and we strongly recommend an upgrade.

05My circuit breaker keeps tripping. Does that mean I need a new switchboard?

Not always. A circuit breaker that repeatedly trips may indicate an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, or damaged wiring rather than a board problem. We diagnose the underlying fault first. If the board is old, undersized, or has other safety concerns, we will recommend an upgrade and give you a fixed quote before any work starts.

06Do I need to upgrade my switchboard to install an EV charger or solar system?

Often yes. EV chargers and solar inverters require dedicated circuits and in some cases additional capacity that older switchboards cannot safely provide. We assess your existing board when quoting EV charger installation or solar work and flag any upgrade needed upfront, so there are no surprises on installation day.

07Will the power be off during the switchboard upgrade?

Yes. Your main supply needs to be de-energised for the duration of the swap. We coordinate the outage window with you before the job. For most residential upgrades the outage is four to six hours. We restore power and test every circuit before we leave.
