[ OVERVIEW ]

What does EV charger installation involve?

An EV home charger (also called Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment, or EVSE) connects your car to your home electrical supply. In NSW, installation of any hardwired charging equipment must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Plugging into a standard GPO is the only option you can set up yourself, and it is the slowest and least safe long-term approach.

Type 2 AC chargers (7kW to 22kW) charge an average electric vehicle fully overnight and are the practical standard for home charging in Sydney. They require a dedicated circuit from your switchboard. Most residential installs use a 32-amp circuit and a wall-mounted charging unit.

We assess your existing switchboard capacity before recommending a charger size, run a dedicated circuit to your garage or driveway, mount the charging unit at the right height, and commission the system. We issue a CCEW for the completed work. If your switchboard needs upgrading to accommodate the new load, we quote both together.

Common reasons EV owners call us

  • Just took delivery of an EV and need a proper home charger installed
  • Currently charging from a 10-amp GPO and want a faster Type 2 solution
  • Switchboard upgrade needed to accommodate a new charger circuit
  • Garage or carport wiring needs a new circuit run from the main board
  • Installing solar and want to integrate EV charging with export control
  • Renting a property and need a charge point for a defined parking space
  • Commercial or multi-unit building needing multiple EVSE points
  • Current charger keeps tripping the RCD and needs fault diagnosis

EV charger installs are one of the most common jobs we book in Sydney. If you have taken delivery of your vehicle and have no proper charging setup yet, we can typically schedule your install within the week.

EV charging explained before you book

Type 1 vs Type 2 charging

Type 1 charging uses a standard 10-amp power outlet and delivers roughly 8 to 15 km of range per hour. It is fine for PHEV owners driving short distances. Level 2 AC charging (7kW on a 32A circuit) delivers 40 to 60 km per hour and will charge most EVs from flat overnight. We recommend Level 2 for full EV owners in Sydney.

Dedicated circuit requirements

A Type 2 charger needs a dedicated 32-amp circuit directly from your switchboard. This means it cannot share a circuit with other appliances. The cable run from your switchboard to the charger location, plus the circuit breaker and RCD protection, are part of what we install. Older switchboards may need an upgrade first.

Smart charger features

Modern EVSE units include Wi-Fi connectivity, scheduling to charge during off-peak tariff periods, solar export integration, and energy monitoring. Some NSW electricity retailers offer EV-specific tariffs with cheaper overnight rates. We can install smart charger units that connect to your home network and work with your tariff schedule.

Government rebates in NSW

The NSW Government has offered EV rebates and stamp duty exemptions under the Electric Vehicle Strategy. Eligible vehicles and charger types change periodically. We recommend checking the NSW Government website for current incentives before purchasing your charger unit. Our installation pricing is separate from and does not depend on rebate eligibility.

Couldn’t be happier with Electrosurge Solutions. I had a full house rewire done and a bunch of upgrades like downlights, pendant lighting, new powerpoints, ethernet/data cabling, and exterior sensor lights. Sam is very tidy and everything looks and works perfectly. Really easy to deal with and you can tell they take pride in doing things properly. Definitely recommend if you want a quality electrician.

Frequently asked questions

01Do I need a licensed electrician to install an EV charger in NSW?

Yes. Any hardwired EV charging unit (Type 2 EVSE) must be installed by a licensed electrician in NSW. The installation involves a dedicated circuit from your switchboard, which is notifiable electrical work. We hold Contractors Licence 493243C and issue a CCEW for every EV charger installation we complete.

02How much does EV charger installation cost in Sydney?

A standard Type 2 home charger installation in a Sydney garage close to the switchboard typically costs $800 to $1,400 for labour and materials, not including the charger unit. Longer cable runs, underground trenching, or switchboard upgrades add to the total. We quote the complete job after a site assessment.

03Which EV charger brand should I buy?

We install owner-supplied units and can also supply chargers. Common quality brands available in Australia include Wallbox, Tesla Wall Connector, EVNEX, Ocular, and Fronius Wattpilot. The right choice depends on your vehicle's onboard charger capacity, whether you want smart scheduling or solar integration, and your budget. We advise on compatibility before you purchase.

04How fast will a Type 2 charger charge my EV?

A standard single-phase 7.4kW Type 2 charger delivers roughly 40 to 60 km of range per hour of charging. Most Sydney EV owners fully charge their vehicle from near-flat overnight in eight to ten hours. Your vehicle's onboard charger limits the maximum rate regardless of the charger unit's rated output.

05Does my switchboard need upgrading to install an EV charger?

It depends on your existing board. A Type 2 EV charger needs a dedicated 32-amp circuit. If your switchboard is full, has no spare capacity, or is an older ceramic fuse type, we will need to upgrade it alongside the charger installation. We assess your board as part of the initial site visit and include switchboard work in the quote where needed.

06Can I charge my EV from solar panels at home?

Yes. Smart EV chargers can integrate with solar inverter systems to prioritise charging from excess solar export rather than from the grid. This requires a compatible charger unit and in some cases a solar monitoring system. We install and configure solar-integrated EV charging and can work alongside your existing solar installer or ours.

07Are there government rebates for EV charger installation in NSW?

NSW has offered various EV incentives including purchase rebates and stamp duty exemptions under the NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy. Rebate programs change over time. We recommend checking the NSW Government's dedicated EV page for the latest eligibility requirements. We do not administer rebates but can provide invoices and compliance certificates for any application.
