A 1.5kW or 2kW system installed in 2010 is now undersized for modern household consumption that includes EVs, heat pumps, and home offices. Solar upgrades are more complex than a fresh install because the new components must integrate with what already exists. Adding panels to an existing string inverter requires matching panel wattage and string configuration. In NSW, all additions to an existing solar system are notifiable electrical work requiring a licensed and CEC-accredited electrician. We hold Contractors Licence 493243C and CEC accreditation. We issue a CCEW for all upgrade work and notify your distributor where required under AS/NZS 4777.

Adding panels to an existing string inverter requires that the new panels match the original panels' electrical characteristics closely (voltage, current) or are connected to a separate string. Mismatched panels in the same string reduce output. In some cases the existing inverter cannot accept additional panels and a second inverter or microinverters for the new panels are needed. We assess string compatibility before quoting.
Retrofitting a battery to a non-hybrid solar system often involves replacing the existing string inverter with a hybrid inverter that has a battery input port (DC coupling). Alternatively, an AC-coupled battery with its own inverter connects on the AC side and works with any existing solar inverter. DC coupling is more efficient for new generation but costs more upfront. AC coupling is generally more cost-effective for retrofits.
Solar panels and inverters installed more than 10 years ago may not communicate with modern monitoring or battery systems. Some old inverter brands no longer have manufacturer support. Before buying a battery to pair with an old inverter, we verify the inverter is still serviceable and compatible with your chosen battery brand. Replacing a failed old inverter may be more economical than repairing it.
Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy apply export limits on residential solar systems. Standard connections allow up to 10kVA export per phase. Systems above this limit require specific application and network approval. If you are upgrading to a larger system, your distributor's export limit may affect the maximum usable system size. We manage the network notification process for upgrades that approach or exceed export limits.

Yes. The most common approach for existing grid-connect systems is an AC-coupled battery, which connects on the AC side of your solar inverter. This works with most existing inverters regardless of age or brand. An alternative DC-coupled approach involves replacing your inverter with a hybrid model. We advise on the most cost-effective option for your specific system.
If your inverter is under warranty (most quality brands offer 10 years), contact the manufacturer first. If the inverter is out of warranty and more than 8 to 10 years old, replacement is often more economical than repair, especially if a larger or battery-ready model would improve the system's performance. We assess the existing inverter and quote both repair and replacement options.
Yes, if the inverter is at its rated AC output limit, adding more panels will not increase output during peak generation periods. However, it will increase total daily generation during morning and afternoon shoulder periods when the inverter is not at full capacity. We calculate whether additional panels will provide meaningful benefit given your existing inverter size.
The federal STC rebate applies to additional panels and to new inverters as part of an upgrade. Battery storage upgrades may qualify for the NSW Government's battery incentive programs. Rebate eligibility depends on system configuration and current program availability. We advise on applicable rebates when quoting your upgrade.
Compare your actual annual generation (from your inverter's monitoring or your electricity bill) against the expected output for your system size in Sydney. A 5kW system should generate roughly 6,500 to 7,500 kWh per year in Sydney conditions. If your system is producing significantly less than that, there may be a panel fault, inverter issue, or shading problem worth investigating.
