Renovation electrical work covers any changes to the electrical installation required as part of a home renovation project. This includes adding new power points and lighting circuits, moving or adding switchboard circuits to support new loads (kitchen appliances, bathroom heating, air conditioning), running new wiring through opened walls and ceilings, and fitting electrical components at the end of the build.
In NSW, all additions and alterations to a home's electrical installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This applies equally to a single new power point and a full whole-home rewire. The work is notifiable to NSW Fair Trading and requires a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) for the completed installation.
The most common mistake homeowners make is engaging an electrician too late in the renovation process. Rough-in wiring (running cables before wall lining) needs to happen before plastering or tiling. If electrical work is needed after walls are complete, access costs increase significantly. We work alongside your builder, plumber, and other trades to coordinate rough-in timing and avoid rework.
Whatever your renovation scope, if walls or ceilings are being opened, this is the right time to check and upgrade the wiring in those areas. It costs far less to do it now than to open finished surfaces later.
Rough-in is the first electrical stage, where cables are pulled through walls and ceilings, conduits are installed, and all cabling reaches the correct positions before lining goes up. Fitout is the second stage, where switches, power points, light fittings, and switchboard connections are completed after lining and finishing is done. Missing the rough-in stage means all cabling must be surface-run or walls must be reopened.
Renovation additions often push the switchboard to or past its circuit capacity. A kitchen renovation typically requires four to six new circuits. A bathroom remodel typically requires two to three. If your existing switchboard is full, old-style, or lacks safety switches, now is the logical time to upgrade it. We assess your existing board at the quote stage and include any required upgrade in the project price.
Electrical installations in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries must comply with AS/NZS 3000 zone requirements. Zones define how close electrical fittings can be to water sources, what ingress protection (IP) rating fittings require in each zone, and which circuit types are permitted. Showers, baths, and sinks create zones that affect light fitting type, power point positioning, and heating circuit requirements.
Renovating a pre-1980s Sydney home often reveals wiring that does not meet current standards. Rubber-sheathed cables, cloth-covered wiring, and old fusible wire fuse boards may all be uncovered. NSW regulations require that any existing non-compliant wiring that is accessible during a renovation must be upgraded. We identify the scope of required upgrade work during the rough-in stage and include it in the project quote.

As early as possible. Ideally before the construction drawings are finalised so electrical requirements can be incorporated into the design. At the latest, engage an electrician before framing is completed and wall lining starts. Missing the rough-in window is the most expensive mistake on renovation electrical projects. We quote and schedule from the plans so we are ready to rough in when the builder opens the walls.
Yes, for notifiable work. Adding new circuits, moving circuits, installing switchboards, and fitting new wiring are all notifiable electrical work in NSW. We issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) for all notifiable renovation electrical work. Your certifier (if required for the renovation) and your insurer may ask to see this document.
A typical Sydney kitchen renovation requires four to six dedicated circuits: oven (32A), dishwasher, microwave or combination oven, refrigerator, rangehood, and a general kitchen power circuit. Some high-load kitchens also need a dedicated circuit for a coffee machine, wine fridge, or induction cooktop. We assess the appliance layout on the plans and size the circuits accordingly.
Possibly. If your existing switchboard is at or near capacity, or if it lacks safety switches on all circuits, adding kitchen circuits requires an upgrade. Modern kitchen loads (induction cooktops, EV chargers, solar inverters) are significantly heavier than the loads switchboards from the 1990s were designed for. We check your switchboard capacity at the quote stage and include any required upgrade in the project price.
Bathroom circuits must be RCD-protected (safety switch). Light fittings and exhaust fans in or above showers must have an appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) rating for their zone. Heat lamps typically need a dedicated circuit. Power points cannot be positioned within 1200mm of shower or bath zones. We design the bathroom electrical layout to comply with AS/NZS 3000 zone requirements and install to the relevant wiring rules.
Yes, with appropriate care. Heritage listings affect structural changes, external appearance, and material choices, but electrical work inside a heritage building follows the same wiring standards as any other residential installation. Where concealed wiring is not possible without compromising heritage fabric, surface conduit or other approved methods are used. We work within heritage constraints and coordinate with your heritage consultant or certifier where required.
