[ OVERVIEW ]

What does battery storage installation involve?

A home battery storage system stores excess solar generation or cheap overnight grid power and discharges it when electricity is expensive or when the grid fails. The battery connects to your solar inverter or to a dedicated hybrid inverter, and charges and discharges automatically based on your programmed settings or your retailer's smart tariff signal.

Installation involves mounting the battery unit, installing a hybrid inverter or battery gateway, running DC and AC wiring between the battery, inverter, and switchboard, configuring the system's charge and discharge settings, and commissioning the monitoring app. Where backup power is required, additional switchover equipment is installed to supply critical circuits during a grid outage.

In NSW, battery storage electrical installation is licensed electrical work. We hold Contractors Licence 493243C and carry battery-specific accreditation. We issue a CCEW for the installation and can assist with any grid connection notification required by your distributor under the AS/NZS 4777 standard for battery inverters.

Common reasons homeowners consider battery storage

  • Existing solar system exporting large amounts and wanting to store that energy instead
  • High evening electricity rates making self-consumption economics attractive
  • Frequent grid outages in the area and wanting backup power for essential circuits
  • New solar installation and wanting battery from day one
  • Time-of-use tariff with cheap overnight rates that can be stored and used in the evening
  • Adding an EV and wanting to charge from battery storage during the day
  • Business or farm property wanting energy independence
  • NSW Government or retailer battery incentive making the investment more viable

Battery storage makes the most financial sense when your solar system has significant afternoon export or you are on a time-of-use tariff with large peak-to-off-peak price differences. We analyse your usage profile before recommending a system size.

Battery storage explained

Usable capacity and what it means

Battery capacity is quoted in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A 10kWh battery stores roughly 10 units of electricity. Usable capacity is usually 90 to 95 percent of total capacity (manufacturers protect a small buffer to extend cycle life). A 10kWh usable battery can power an average Sydney home's essential loads for eight to twelve hours, depending on your consumption.

AC vs DC coupled systems

DC-coupled batteries connect directly to the solar panels before the inverter, which is more efficient but requires a hybrid inverter. AC-coupled batteries (like Tesla Powerwall 3) connect on the AC side of your existing solar system, making them compatible with most existing inverters. DC coupling is more efficient for new installs. AC coupling is more practical for retrofitting battery to an existing system.

Backup power and critical loads

Not all battery systems provide backup power automatically. Basic systems go offline when the grid fails. Systems with an 'islanding' or 'backup' capability keep selected circuits powered during a grid outage. For backup power you need a battery with an integrated backup module and a switchover relay installed to your switchboard. We quote backup capability separately as it adds to installation cost.

Virtual power plants in NSW

A virtual power plant (VPP) is a network of home batteries operated as a group by an energy retailer or aggregator. NSW has had several VPP programs from retailers including Origin, Amber, and AGL. In exchange for allowing the operator to dispatch your battery, you typically receive a bill credit or lower energy rates. VPP participation requires a compatible battery and a network agreement.

Couldn’t be happier with Electrosurge Solutions. I had a full house rewire done and a bunch of upgrades like downlights, pendant lighting, new powerpoints, ethernet/data cabling, and exterior sensor lights. Sam is very tidy and everything looks and works perfectly. Really easy to deal with and you can tell they take pride in doing things properly. Definitely recommend if you want a quality electrician.

Frequently asked questions

01Is a battery storage system worth it in Sydney?

It depends on your situation. Battery storage offers the best returns if your solar system exports significant afternoon generation, you are on a time-of-use tariff with high peak rates, or you want backup power capability. With Sydney electricity prices above 30 cents per kWh on peak tariffs and the cost of batteries falling, payback periods of 8 to 12 years are achievable for many homes. We model your specific situation before recommending.

02What battery brands do you install?

We install all major brands available in Australia including Tesla Powerwall 3, Sungrow SBR, BYD Battery-Box, Enphase IQ Battery, Sonnen, and AlphaESS. Brand choice depends on your existing inverter, capacity requirements, backup power needs, and budget. We advise on compatibility with your solar system before you commit to a specific product.

03How long does battery installation take?

A standard residential battery installation in Sydney typically takes four to eight hours. Adding a new hybrid inverter or backup switchover relay may extend the job to a full day. We schedule a time block with you and confirm the outage period for switchboard connection work before the job day.

04Does the NSW Government offer battery rebates?

NSW has offered various battery incentive programs, including the Ausgrid Home Battery Incentive and contributions from other programs. Availability and rebate amounts change periodically. We recommend checking the NSW Government's energy programs page and your electricity distributor's current offers before purchasing. We can assist with documentation for rebate applications.

05Can a battery keep my house running during a blackout?

Only if you have a battery system with backup (islanding) capability and the required switchover hardware installed. Standard grid-connect solar and battery systems shut down during a blackout for safety. Backup-capable systems like the Tesla Powerwall 3 or Sonnen can automatically switch to island mode and supply selected circuits. We install the backup relay and configure the critical load panel.

06What is the lifespan of a home battery?

Most quality home batteries are warranted for 10 years or a specified number of charge cycles (typically 4,000 to 6,000), whichever comes first. At end of warranty, capacity is guaranteed at 70 to 80 percent of original rated capacity. Real-world lifespan depends on how often the battery cycles and operating temperature. Sydney's climate is generally favourable for battery longevity.
