Electrical compliance work covers all the electrical upgrades and repairs required to bring a premises up to the standards set by AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, NSW Fair Trading, the National Construction Code, and other regulatory bodies. Rectification means fixing identified defects so that a property can be certified as compliant.
The most common trigger is a formal notice. NSW Fair Trading and electricity distributors (Ausgrid, Essential Energy) can issue electrical defect notices requiring specific work to be completed within a set timeframe. Failure to comply with a defect notice can result in supply disconnection.
Other common triggers include insurance requirements following a claim, a building inspection as part of a property transaction, a landlord's obligation to maintain rental premises in a safe condition, or a business preparing for a change of use or new tenancy approval.
We work through the defect list, carry out the required rectification work, and issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) lodged with NSW Fair Trading. AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules is the primary Australian standard governing all electrical installation work. Older properties may have wiring installed to earlier versions of the standard or pre-standard practices. While older work is not always required to be upgraded immediately, electrical defects or renovations that touch existing wiring typically require bringing affected circuits up to the current standard.
Inadequate earthing and bonding is one of the most common defects found in older NSW properties. The earth provides the return path for fault current, allowing safety devices to operate correctly. AS/NZS 3000 has specific requirements for main earthing conductors, equipotential bonding of metallic services, and earth electrode resistance. Correcting earthing defects is a common rectification task.

Ausgrid and Essential Energy defect notices typically allow between 30 and 90 days depending on the severity of the defect. Some critical safety defects have shorter timeframes. The notice will state the deadline. Contact us as soon as you receive a notice so we can assess the required work and ensure it is completed with time to spare.
Yes. If rectification is not completed within the timeframe on the notice, the electricity distributor has the authority to disconnect your supply. Reconnection after disconnection involves additional costs and paperwork. We strongly recommend acting on notices promptly.
Not necessarily. Existing wiring that complied with standards at the time of installation is not automatically required to be upgraded. However, if you are doing renovations that touch the existing wiring, carrying out significant additional load, or a defect notice has identified specific non-compliance, rectification may be required. We assess and advise on what is and is not required for your situation.
NSW landlords have obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 to maintain rental premises in a reasonable state of repair, which includes electrical safety. If a licensed inspection has identified non-compliant or unsafe electrical installations, rectification is typically required before the next tenancy or as directed by the inspector. We issue a CCEW on completion.
Yes. For defect notices from Ausgrid or Essential Energy, we communicate directly with the distributor throughout the process, from initial scope confirmation through to completion sign-off. You do not need to manage that relationship yourself.
Yes. As the licensed contractor carrying out the notifiable work, we issue the CCEW and lodge it with NSW Fair Trading within seven days of completion. A copy is provided to you. This is your evidence that the work was done correctly and is on record with the regulator.
