What is high bay lighting and why does it matter?
High bay lighting refers to light fittings designed for ceiling heights above four metres. Warehouses, factories, distribution centres, and large retail spaces all fall into this category. At height, standard fittings do not produce enough light at floor level to meet safe working standards.
AS/NZS 1680 Interior Lighting sets minimum lux levels for different work areas. A general warehouse aisle typically requires 160 lux at floor level. Fine assembly or quality inspection areas may require 500 lux or more. Getting this right is not just a comfort issue. Inadequate lighting at a workplace is a WHS risk in NSW.
Most older warehouses still use metal halide or fluorescent T8 high bay fittings. LED high bays now deliver 40 to 60 percent energy savings over metal halide, last significantly longer, and provide better colour rendering so staff can work accurately. The payback period from an LED upgrade in a typical Sydney warehouse is commonly two to four years.

High bay lighting explained
Lux and lumen output
Lumens measure the total light output of a fitting. Lux measures how much of that light falls on a surface one metre square. Because high bay fittings are mounted well above the floor, lumen output needs to be high to achieve adequate lux at working height. We calculate required lumen output based on ceiling height and target lux level.
Beam angle
High bay fittings come in different beam angles, typically 60, 90, or 120 degrees. Narrow beams concentrate light on a small area directly below, useful for high-rack storage. Wide beams spread light over a larger floor area. We match beam angle to your racking configuration and aisle width.
IP rating
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating of a fitting tells you how well it resists dust and water. A standard warehouse typically requires IP65 fittings, which are dust-tight and protected against water jets. Cold storage areas, wash-down areas, or outdoor-covered spaces may require higher ratings.
Motion sensors and zone control
Adding motion sensors to high bay fittings further reduces energy consumption by dimming or switching off lights in unoccupied zones. Some modern LED high bays have integrated sensors. We can wire sensor and dimming controls as part of a new installation or retrofit them to an existing system.

01What lux level does a warehouse need under NSW work health and safety rules?+
AS/NZS 1680 specifies minimum lux levels by task type. General warehouse aisles require a minimum of 160 lux. Areas with detail work, quality checking, or packing tasks may require 320 to 500 lux. The NSW Work Health and Safety Act 2011 requires workplaces to maintain safe conditions, which includes adequate lighting. We calculate your required lux levels as part of our site survey.
02How much can an LED upgrade save on energy costs?+
LED high bay fittings typically use 40 to 60 percent less energy than equivalent metal halide or fluorescent fittings. A warehouse running 50 metal halide fittings for 10 hours per day can save several thousand dollars per year in electricity costs after upgrading to LED. We can model estimated savings based on your current fittings and operating hours when we quote.
03Can you work around warehouse operations so we do not have to shut down?+
In most cases yes. We can stage the upgrade in sections, working on areas of the warehouse that are inactive during your operating hours. We plan the work around your schedule and discuss access requirements before booking.
04Do LED high bay upgrades qualify for any NSW government rebates?+
The NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) may apply to LED upgrades in commercial and industrial premises. Eligibility depends on the existing fittings being replaced and the type of premises. We can advise during the quoting stage and refer you to an accredited scheme provider if rebates are applicable.
05Do you also install emergency lighting in warehouses?+
Yes. Many warehouses and commercial buildings require emergency lighting and exit signs under the National Construction Code. We install and maintain AS 2293-compliant emergency lighting systems, including the annual testing and maintenance required to keep them compliant. 06What is the lifespan of an LED high bay fitting?+
Quality LED high bay fittings are typically rated for 50,000 hours or more before lumen output drops below 70 percent of original output (L70 rating). Running at 10 hours per day, that is approximately 13 years before significant light output degradation. Compare that to metal halide lamps that need replacement every 12 to 18 months.
